Vim has everything internally in UTF-8, and will convert between character sets when it handles files. Character sets in text editors UTF-8 in Vim If you want the programs in Norwegian instead on English, use nb_NO.UTF-8 for Bokmål and nn_NO.UTF-8 for New Norwegian. This is English like they speak it in Denmark(!) - it gives English language, but Nordic time set, currency, maps where North is up, and similar things that are spesific to the country or region you are in. bashrc, so you don't have to write everything every time. The export command is a good command to have in. Lynx:~$ export LC_ALL=en_DK.UTF-8You can then see the changes by writing locale If you want to change this, you can use these commands: lynx:~$ export LANG=en_DK.UTF-8 If you want to change locale, it could be a good idea to first check what's available: lynx:~$ locale -a You can check which locale is in use at any given moment with the command locale: lynx:~$ locale This server has the english UTF-8 as the standard character set, so the setup should be fairly pain free. We will here look at the server as an example. Character sets on the login.stud and login.ansatt NTNU servers In PuTTY you have to log in and choose Translation under Category and find UTF-8 in the list of Character sets on received data. In the Gnome Terminal, you might have to use the menu Terminal - Set Character Set - UTF-8 if your system isn't already set to this. Emulators like uxterm and urxvt only support UTF-8. The first thing you have to do is configure your terminal emulator to use UTF-8. Locale is a term concerning how character sets, numbers, currency, and dates will be shown. The modern Unicode (UTF) is a comprehensive standard and will prevent most problems connected to character sets. It's therefore important that text is read in the same character set as it was written. The character set of a program decides how characters are interpreted by the computer system. Not that it is difficult to cut and paste an appropriate dd commandline, but it comes across as a bit rough in terms of elegance don't you think? To be honest, I haven't even tried creating a bootable usb with the new distribution since I always just extract the live folder onto my hard drive and boot via my grub4dos installation, so maybe I'm missing something. Doesn't matter if everyone using DD is technically skilled in using Linux, which may be the majority case (I don't know) but its nice to build in as much user-friendliness as feasible. Best by far, I feel is using a DebianDog installer that simplifies and even hides as many technical details as possible without losing too much flexibility. Reading some of the details you have been discussing recently I can't help thinking that though dd can be used to create a bootable usb from hybrid iso, as you discuss, I personally think that is far too technical a procedure for many users.

If a suffragist of uneccentric appearance and pleasant manners made a speech to her, she usually nodded her head in agreement and confessed that what was said was “all right.” If a trade union organiser spoke to her about the conditions of her work and the need of organisation, she frequently agreed again, and if she had a grievance that was exceedingly acute she would sometimes temporarily become a member of the union and allow the organiser to get the grievance removed for her. Miss Annie Kenney, the half-dozen ex-factory workers who were employed as speakers by the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies and the Women’s Freedom League, the dear old souls in nodding bonnets and jet-beaded mantles who were brought from the East End by Miss Sylvia Pankhurst to prattle motherly common sense from the plinth of the Nelson’s Column, the handful of Lancashire weavers or Black Country hollowware workers who sometimes came to London as deputations to Cabinet Ministers, and the old factory hands who from time to time were found among the organisers of such bodies as the National Federation of Women Workers or the Workers’ Union, were the wonders of their time.įor the average factory woman was indifferent both to the attempts to get her a vote and to the attempts to improve her economic position. The circumstances of war had laid the groundwork for a whole new kind of working woman.īefore the war a public-spirited factory woman was so rare a being that she was worn as a trophy by the organisation that had the luck to discover her. What’s more, the war destroyed many workers’ “formerly incorrigible belief in the economic security of marriage”. Within the working class, new leaders of workers’ rights emerged. The importance of women’s work in munitions factories, as acknowledged by the government and the press, emboldened the workers, WM argued. The majority of suffrage organisations were dominated by the middle- and upper-classes, and most women who worked in factories were more concerned with maintaining a marriage than joining a union to fight for a pay rise. Prior to the First World War, argued this writer, who signed as “WM”, the average factory woman was “indifferent” to suffragism and the attempts to improve her working conditions or economic position. Tom O'Bedlam, as he further explains himself, claims to be the world's most powerful living magician, and out of disbelieving cussedness and fascination, Dane deigns to follow him around for a while. So, Dane reasons, something interesting's going on with this Tom fellow. The bobbie questions Tom about Dane's whereabouts, gets no sensible answer, and moves on - while Dane stands beside Tom in plain view for the entire exchange. Later that same day, Tom snatches Dane as he runs from the police, and pulls him into an alley. Dane is getting by on shoplifted snacks and has made a couple of nice gutter-punk friends, who tell him Tom's harmless but annoying, and can be safely ignored. Mad Tom is a beggar, looking every bit the part with his army-surplus gear and wizardly grey beard, muttering a pastiche of literature and rhythmic chant. He hauls Dane the hell out of there and barely has time to explain that he's the leader of a cell within the secret society known as the Invisibles and Dane is their newest recruit, before he disappears, leaving Dane alone and homeless on the streets of London. He tears into Harmony House, its staff, and finally its headmaster, with handguns and your basic contemporary-action-hero kung fu. King Mob is a fury in shock white hair, a curious diving-mask thing, and an even more curious black vinyl jacket that looks like it's had little black-vinyl Dixie cups glued to it all over. Nothing short of an armed rescue team could save Dane now. He alludes repeatedly that he may have a changed sort of sight, and with Dane cornered and his establishment caught red-handed, he prophesies what Dane will become, like himself: "smooth between the ears, smooth between the legs". Gelt, a corpulent ghoul in a dark suit and darker glasses. When collecting those variations, I mostly relied on my subjective perception of unpleasantness, which could potentially damage the outcome. For such entries, I gathered a small set of sound effects that felt different enough from one another. For instance, “Headcrab sound from Half-Life 2” could refer to every sound the Headcrab makes. A few of them were still somewhat ambiguous. Out of those 240 entries, I shortlisted 19 sounds with more than three mentions. Many of the entries came from old articles and forum posts, so my data is heavily biased towards the sounds from the older games. For obvious reasons, I had to limit the scope of my study to sound effects only.Īfter some googling and asking people within my social bubble, I filled a spreadsheet with 240 entries, pointing at unsettling, scary, disturbing, and disgusting sounds from videogames. Still, they usually refer to the sound of specific scenes or complex events, but not to individual sound effects. Most players can name several cases of unpleasant sonic experience in games. Gathering the data was much more challenging than I expected. Data collectionįirst, I needed the sounds to analyze. Fluctuation strength was the feature I really wanted to examine, but I couldn’t find good enough tools to do that. The attack time would require a rather specific set of data. Others, like loudness and low pitch, were hard to test in a web-based experiment where each participant uses their device. Here, I mostly focus on assessing roughness and sharpness that were frequently named as critical factors for auditory unpleasantness. I did not examine many of the features mentioned in the previous post. Third, in case you forgot, I’m not an academic, this post is not peer-reviewed, and I don’t have any supervisor to stop me from making stupid mistakes. Second, working with numeric data, graphs, and spreadsheets is not a part of my daily routine, so the chances I have messed something up are close to 100%. First, I’d let real researchers generate this kind of knowledge. In the end, scientific knowledge on this front should demonstrate at least some parallels with professional intuition.ĭisclaimer: I have no intention to prove or disprove scientific theories and hypotheses with this post. That’s why instead of designing horrible noises and torturing the test subjects with them, I decided to analyze real sound effects from well-known games. Then game audio designers must have already applied them in their work based on intuitive judgment. Let’s assume we can reduce the non-contextual unpleasantness of a sound to a set of acoustic properties. In the second part, I’m trying to apply that knowledge to analyze the actual sounds from videogames. In the previous post, I described several acoustic properties that, according to scientific literature, make sound unpleasant to hear. they all have physical gifts' - CBS Sports 9:08 AM UTC Pack's What She Said, episode 120 Cheesehead TV 8:50 AM UTC NFL teams that helped their QB the most and least in 2022: Bengals, Ravens take opposite paths - CBS Sports 7:32 AM UTC Packers first-round draft pick Quay Walker says he's taking the mentality that he went undrafted 7:13 AM UTC Every NFL team's most likely future Hall of Famer: Tom Brady, Aaron Donald among 'locks', T.J.
